To The Water

The light reflects from the still water below, you can sense the calm even before the water envelops you. The warmth, the way you are held, and with each stroke the day ahead or the day behind fades further as you breathe into the moment. A ritual that settles, that resets; the place where you find that calm waiting, again and again.

To the Water began with a project at Glenogle Baths in Edinburgh’s Stockbridge area, the pool Soo learned to swim in as a child. Seeing this building again, Soo was struck by the architectural detailing, and went on to photograph a series of historic pools around Edinburgh and across the UK. In this body of work, Soo shares her passion for architecture and composition, capturing the striking symmetry and dramatic proportions, along with the serene atmosphere of each space.

Each of these pools is open to the public, and each serves a community that uses these spaces daily. This collection has a timeless quality and a softness that feels far removed from the pressures of the world beyond. The pool becomes a place of escape, and a place to find the stillness within.
