Between Sea and Sky

Between Sea and Sky is an exploration of transience, of those chapters between the familiar and cherished, and the unknown that lies ahead. The close embrace of a goodbye; the way we hold on, unsure of what might happen when we let go.

The figures are captured in moments, suspended together and also apart. At times, apart from themselves, reaching for their past, falling towards their future. Moments that feel fleeting and fragile and impossibly tender. Moments that reflect the flow of life.

This collection by Soo Burnell opens a new chapter in her body of work. Between Sea and Sky evolved from a journey of grief after the loss of a close friend. As Soo planned this collection, she also found herself at a point of transition in different parts of her life – positive transitions that are integral to life’s journey.

“The figures are the characters from the stories I have told before in my work, so this collection is also a continuation of these familiar narratives although it feels very different visually. For me, Between Sea and Sky is a study about love and connection. It is about holding on but also understanding when to let go, and offering that space to evolve into whatever our next chapter of life might be.”
